Three to See: Diving & Boat Dives on the Central Coast

exhmas adelaide2

Ex-HMAS Adelaide (1980-2008)

Location: Avoca Beach / Terrigal

A former Australian naval warship, the Ex-HMAS Adelaide was sunk approximately 1.8km off Avoca Beach on 13th April 2011. Scuttled 32m below sea level, the site for the ship was prepared to create an artificial reef for divers and marine life to enjoy long before it was to rest there. Three years on the Ex-HMAS Adelaide has already attracted a healthy marine population.

The Ex-HMAS Adelaide measures 138.1m from bow to stern, originally weighing in at 4,100 tonnes. She now sits along a sandy bottom and can be dived at depths between 18 metres to 32 metres. Diver access holes are strategically placed throughout the vessel to allow easy access to explore the key features of the wreck.

ss kiama2

ss kiama1

The Kiama (1921-1951)

Location: Toowoon Bay

47 metres below the water’s surface at Toowoon Bay lays SS Kiama, a 446 ton wooden steamer collier, which sunk during rough seas off The Entrance bommies in 1951 whilst on a regular work journey between Sydney and Newcastle. This sinking was filled with tragedy with only 6 of the 12-crew members surviving, some who were local residents themselves, and well known to locals.

SS Nerong

The Nerong (1903-1917)

Location: Norah Head

SS Nerong was commissioned in 1903 and the fate of this ship is full of intrigue. After leaving Sydney, the SS Nerong made their journey up the NSW coastline to Nambucca but as the ship headed in to an immense storm, the captain who knew the vessel well ordered all hatches secured. Early the next morning crew noticed water coming in to the engine room and the men desperately tried to stem the flow of water without any success. They had less than an hour to abandon the ship which sank in September 1917, just 3 nautical miles off Norah Head Lighthouse. SS Nerong lies on a beautiful white sandy bed where it attracts a multitude of marine life and Wobbegongs. Her boiler, galley stove and deck winches still stand. Diving depths range from 43 to 46 metres and is suitable for experienced divers only.
