Spotlight On: Kaleah Balcomb, Cove Cafe

Cove Cafe is highly regarded as Terrigal’s best cafe and if you’re not already familiar with Cove, let me explain: cafe patrons are initially blown away by its seaside location at The Haven … and then the food arrives! Delicious, beautifully presented unique meals created by top chefs. And did we mention the coffee? Cove manager Kaleah Balcomb not only oversees the day to day operations of the business, she also makes a killer coffee, coming second recently in Manfredi’s Barista comp. We chat to Kaleah about Cove and her love for the Coast…

Tell us about Cove Cafe and how it eventuated…
The Cove is an amazing cafe right on the beach in the Haven, Terrigal. I actually started working upstairs in Reef Restaurant about 5 years ago, and then somehow found myself working downstairs at Cove around sporadic university and music commitments. My love of coffee and the fantastic workplace means I’ve been unable to leave!

Would you say breakfast or lunch is your busiest time of day?
It depends on the day of the week. During weekdays breakfast tends to be busier, a lot of people come in for their morning coffee. On weekends lunch tends to be more popular, especially if the weather is nice.

Cove_Kaleah 4

Tell us about what your role entails…
I generally work coffee and teas. I honestly love to make coffee and experiment with different styles of latte art. I also equip all staff with barista skills – even at least at the basics – so anyone can step up to the machine when needed. My job description also happens to cover drinking as much coffee as possible!!

What is your most popular dish?
The Bacon & Egg Spring Rolls – we are the only cafe that does a dish like it.

COVE (1)

Which dish is your personal favourite?
Let me think … Bacon & Egg Spring Rolls! They’re so good that customers became angry when we tried to take them off the menu! Plus there’s no hangover cure like them…

What do you enjoy most about the Central Coast?
The laid back vibe.

Is there anything the Central Coast needs?
We’re lucky enough to be in a place that has almost everything. I just wish it was all closer together!

Your favourite place on the Coast?
Too many to choose from. Terrigal has a great beach and a good choice of cafes, restaurants, bars and ice creameries. Not to mention a wonderful view all of the time.

Cove_Kaleah 1

Which beach do you love most and why?
Bateau Bay. It’s a fairly quiet beach, my family would always go there when I was little and we would climb the rocks. I have fond memories of it.

Which sports team do you support?
The one that’s winning at the time!

Best Dining Experience (apart from Cove Cafe)?
The Reef Restaurant!

If someone was visiting the Central Coast for the first time what would you recommend they do?
Visit Cove Cafe! The pelican feeding at The Entrance is good too and time at our beaches is well spent.

Where do you love to go when not on the Coast?
To be honest, I don’t leave much – I love it here. Every so often I’ll do a trip to Sydney or Newcastle.

Which Accom Holidays property would you most like to stay at?
Agave at MacMasters Beach looks stunning!

Worth A Visit: Green Tangerine, Long Jetty

Green Tangerine | 393 The Entrance Road, Long Jetty | 0422 607 252

For as long as I can recall Long Jetty on the Central Coast has been slow to develop, but in the past 12-18 months I have seen it flourish and thrive as a quirky-cool take on Sydney’s Newtown. Adjacent to The Entrance, the town of Long Jetty is growing in popularity as laid-back and creative types set up shop and attract those with a similar outlook on life. From bustling cafes to bang-on trend pre-loved vintage stores, home wares, bric-a-brac and everything in between. And that’s where Green Tangerine comes in.  A unique artisan bakery, café and specialty grocery store set on the main road opposite The Glass Onion Society, Green Tangerine will grab your interest from the moment you lay eyes on its fantastic street wall art. Specialising in the freshest, most delicious baked goods including gluten free breads right through to fresh produce and specialty grocery options such as tea, coffee, sauce and spices, Green Tangerine will keep you coming back for a sticky-beek.

Spotlight On: Michael Hayes, Reef Restaurant

Being a restaurant manager is no easy feat but when you work at one of the Central Coast’s best restaurants no two days are the same. With a stunning outlook from his ‘office’ out to Terrigal Haven and beyond, it is easy to see why Michael Hayes of Reef Restaurant loves Terrigal. We had a quick chat with Michael about Reef Restaurant and his favourite places on the Coast…

Tell us about Reef Restaurant and how it eventuated…
The Reef Restaurant was created some 12 years ago following the rebuilding of the old Sailing Club, the Galley Restaurant. The present owners of Reef Restaurant and Cove Cafe took over 5 years ago.

What is your most popular dish?
Our most popular dish is the Deconstructed Beef Wellington.

Which is your personal favourite?
My personal favourite is the Kinkawooka Black Mussels in white wine and cream garlic sauce.

Reef Restaurant is a popular venue for functions… Absolutely. We cater for weddings of all sizes and different types functions ranging from corporate to private events. We can seat up to 150 guests for functions and around 200 standing. Weddings are very popular so it’s a must to book well in advance. The view and atmosphere here is simply amazing – you won’t want to miss out!

What do you enjoy most about the Central Coast?
There are so many beautiful beaches, cafés and restaurants.

Is there anything the Central Coast needs?
I think more double lane roads are needed. There are just too many single lanes which slows down the traffic and makes driving a chore… And maybe a rugby league team!

Your favourite place on the Coast?
Terrigal. It stays beautiful, regardless of the weather or season. It’s always different and beautiful.

Which beach do you love most and why?
I know I might sound biased but I would have to say The Haven Beach at Terrigal. It is family friendly, there is always something exciting happening with divers coming in and going out, and people out and about. It is a good place to watch the boats come in and clean the fish on the boat ramp nearby.

Which sports team do you support?
Can I choose a couple? I back the Central Coast Mariners, Canberra Raiders and Liverpool Football Club.

Best Dining Experience (apart from Reef Restaurant)?
I was lucky enough to experience Tetsuya’s in the city – that was amazing! The food, service and ambience were above and beyond my expectations.

Your preferred place to shop?
Sergeant Peppers Menswear in Terrigal. I love nice clothes that fit well.

If someone was visiting the Central Coast for the first time what would you recommend they do?
They have to walk up The Skillion. It really is a must.

Where do you love to go when not on the Coast?
Sydney – every now and then I have to get my city fix because it is just so different to the Coast.

Which Accom Holidays property would you most like to stay at?
Lighthouse at Avoca Beach!! It’s just too good to ignore.

Visit Reef Restaurant’s website for their menu, giveaways and news:
