Pet Friendly Guide to the Central Coast
Travelling with a dog changes a few things about a Central Coast holiday: which beach you can actually use, whether a café will let you sit outside with a lead in hand, whether the yard at your holiday house is properly fenced rather than just described that way. This pet friendly Central Coast guide runs through all of it, suburb by suburb, across the stretch of coast Accom Holidays actually operates in, Terrigal down to Holgate: beaches and walks, cafes, and what's worth checking before you book.
Central Coast Council marks off-leash areas with a simple colour system: green signs mean off-leash, amber means on-leash, red means no dogs at all. The boundaries move street by street though, and a few details change from time to time as Council reviews signage, so treat exact boundary streets as a strong guide rather than gospel, and check the sign on the day if you're unsure.
Terrigal and Terrigal Haven
Terrigal Beach itself is red: no dogs, on-leash or off, which catches out plenty of first-time visitors given how central the beach is to the town. The workaround sits just south of it, at Terrigal Haven, a headland reserve with its own unfenced off-leash exercise area and a clear view back across the sand. Between June and November there's a real chance of spotting a whale from the grass without leaving the dog in a car to do it. The Haven car park doubles as the boat ramp car park, so it fills early on weekends.

Between the two, the Terrigal Boardwalk runs 200 metres of timber walkway on-leash rather than off, which turns what could be a single stop into a proper walk with a payoff at the end, rather than a choice between one or the other.

Practical: parking at the Haven boat ramp car park, a kiosk nearby for water and a coffee, dog-friendly outdoor seating at the Beery under the Crowne Plaza.
Worth Knowing
The Haven off-leash area has no fence, and the car park backs directly onto it, so it's worth keeping a new or excitable dog on a long lead until you've got a feel for how it reacts to reversing cars before letting it run properly free.
Wamberal Beach
North of Terrigal, Wamberal does what Terrigal's own beach can't: it's off-leash all day, not just early mornings, from the beach access at Surfers Road south to the boundary near Terrigal Lagoon. It's also simply quieter, particularly outside summer, which makes it the beach most Terrigal-based guests end up defaulting to rather than driving further afield.
Practical: free parking and a dog bag dispenser at the Surfers Road access, no café directly on the beach so bring your own water.
Forresters Beach
A smaller, quieter pocket between Wamberal and Bateau Bay, and one of the few access points on this stretch that's off-leash for the full 24 hours rather than restricted to certain times. The zone runs between the Crystal Street and Henry Street access paths only: dogs aren't permitted at either end, north towards Wyrrabalong National Park or south towards the Wamberal Lagoon Nature Reserve boundary, even on a lead.
Practical: park on Kalakau Avenue, no taps or bins at this access so bring your own water and take rubbish home, no café directly at the beach.
Avoca Beach and North Avoca
Avoca has a village feel that the beach itself carries through, a surf break locals still rate highly, and a lagoon that gives dogs somewhere calmer than the open ocean on a rough day. The off-leash zone wraps around that lagoon, running from the Shark Tower at Avoca Beach north to View Street at North Avoca, roughly 600 metres. South of the Shark Tower is a different beach entirely as far as the rules go: no dogs at all, even on a lead.

Practical: park off Ficus Avenue next to the lagoon or on View Street, walk into Avoca Beach village for a handful of dog-friendly cafes.
Worth Knowing
A lot of visitors assume the whole beach is fair game because they've seen dogs near the lagoon. The southern end past the Shark Tower is a separate, no-dogs zone, and it's the one section here where rangers do actually enforce it.
Copacabana and MacMasters Beach
Copacabana is the quieter, more family-friendly sibling to Avoca and Terrigal, and the beach and headland here reward the guests who bother to walk it rather than just look at it from the car park. The stretch south of the patrolled flags runs off-leash all the way down to MacMasters Beach, popular enough to be one of the busier dog beaches on this part of the coast on a weekend morning. Cockrone Lagoon itself is out of bounds, and the far southern section near Gerda Road switches back to on-leash, so read the signage as you go rather than assuming the whole walk stays off-leash.

Practical: park at either end, Copacabana Beach Reserve or the MacMasters Beach car park; Macs Beach Café at MacMasters is a reliable dog-friendly stop afterwards.
Worth Knowing
This is the one off-leash zone on our patch that changes character partway through. Most people walk south from Copacabana assuming it's off-leash the whole way to MacMasters and get caught out near Gerda Road. Check the sign before you relax the lead again.
Shelly Beach and Bateau Bay
North Shelly Beach is the quiet option here: about 700 metres of off-leash sand from the beach access stairs south to the golf course boundary near Toowoon Bay, usually a lot less crowded than the more central beaches.
Practical: parking at the Shelly Beach Surf Club, Munchas Café there welcomes dogs on the outdoor tables.
Bateau Bay Beach allows dogs off-leash along the Foreshore Reserve near Eve Williams Memorial Oval. The bay itself is unpatrolled, and the creek mouth can run a stronger current after rain, worth knowing if your dog likes to swim rather than wade. The Coast Walking Track through Wyrrabalong National Park links Bateau Bay to Forresters Beach, but national parks are off-limits to dogs under NSW law, so that particular bush walk isn't one to bring the dog on, even on a lead.

Blue Bay
Blue Bay doesn't have a dedicated off-leash stretch of its own the way its neighbours do. Most dog owners staying here simply treat it as the northern end of the Shelly Beach and Toowoon Bay walking strip, which is a fair way to plan the visit rather than expecting a standalone dog beach on Blue Bay's own sand.
Holgate
Holgate sits inland rather than beachside, so it's less a dog-walking destination than a change of pace between beach visits. Firescreek Winery, an organic winery just off the main road, allows leashed dogs in its outdoor area and cellar door, complimentary tasting included if you want to make a proper stop of it.
What Makes a Property Actually Pet Friendly
"Pet friendly" gets used loosely across holiday letting, and it's one of the more common sources of disappointment for guests travelling with a dog. Pavement and dark sand both get hot enough to burn paws on a summer afternoon, so early morning or evening walks are the safer bet from December through February. Several of the quieter off-leash accesses, Forresters Beach in particular, have no water tap, so carry your own if you're planning a longer walk rather than a quick one. And if a beach isn't clearly signed, assume on-leash rather than off: Council does patrol the more popular beaches on weekends, and fines apply outside designated areas.
